The crop was shaping up beautifully. By the end of February, a run of Innovator potatoes near Coonawarra in South Australia's Limestone Coast was finishing nicely — tops going off, a few weeks from harvest once the processors were ready. The grower was looking at 30 tonnes to the acre, maybe better.
Then, seven to ten days out, the forecast started showing rain.
On 28 February 2026 a summer cell dropped 79mm on the paddock, with another 7mm the day after. 86mm in two days, straight onto a crop of finishing spuds.
"Once I saw the paddock under water as it moved on, I thought I'd be lucky to get 10 to the acre," the grower said. "I got 20. I'll take that, the way it was looking."
A week to prepare — but no easy answer
Summer rain is a gamble to plan for. It comes in cells — heavy, isolated falls that flog one paddock while the district down the road barely gets wet. You can see a system coming, but you can't know if you'll cop 10mm or 80 until it's on you.
He had a week's warning and used every day of it. But the obvious move — just turn the irrigation off and dry the ground out — wasn't on the table. It was warm, the crop was still finishing, and pulling the water off entirely risked stressing the spuds and hurting the very yield he was trying to protect.
So he threaded the needle. Using his BushLinx soil probe data, he ran the profile down as far as he safely could — keeping enough moisture up for the heat while opening up as much room as possible in the soil to swallow whatever rain came.
"You're balancing two risks at once," he said. "Too dry and you damage the crop yourself in that heat. But I could see exactly what was in the profile, so I knew how far I could pull it back without doing harm. Without that, you're just guessing."
Some things you can't plan around
In the end, 86mm is 86mm. There's only so much room you can make below a finishing crop, and a fall like that fills it and then some. The bottom spuds sat in water and went, as he knew they might.
"That's just one of those farming risks," he said. "You do what you can and you cop the rest."
But the buffer he'd created did its job where it counted. The damage stopped short of the wipe-out he'd braced for. A crop he'd mentally written down to 10 tonnes came off at 20 — because the groundwork was done before the first drop fell.
The decision, not the data
He's quick to credit the probe data — not for the number on the screen, but for the calls it let him make while there was still time to make them.
"The early decisions are what saved it," he said. "The probe made those possible. By the time the rain's here it's too late — the value was in the week beforehand."
